Rare & Exotic
Copihue (koh-pee-wey)
Lapageria rosea or the Chilean Bellflower is Chile’s national flower.
The exotic bell shaped waxy flower, blooms up to 12 cms long that hangs upside down from a vine. It has a long flowering season, from early spring through to late fall, although they may also flower during other seasons. A divine climbing plant, glossy and heart-shaped leaves are also thick and sturdy, arranged alternatively, leathery and are evergreen.
This particular plant prefers cool, moist and shady environments suitable for ferns. It is truly one of the world’s most beautiful vines, little is known about this plant outside of its native country Chile; perhaps for the extremely slow-growing nature of this species as it will take between 3 to 5 years to fully bloom from a seed, (occasionally 2 years), which requiered inmense patience, but when succsesful... the pay off is supreme.
Lapageria rosea is highly-prized for it’s heavy, waxy, bell-shaped blossoms of thick texture with a gorgeous white speckled pattern inside and sometimes on the outside too, usually red or white however, although it is rare, there are also bi-colours types. They may look delicate, but they’re surprisingly thick and long-lasting, often lasting for weeks on the vine! The vine gracefully climbs its way up a trellis or fence anticlock wise, and looks absolutely stunning over an arbor!
Lapageria is a genus of plant that is part of the Philesiaceae family. It consists of only one specie, Lapageria rosea, but there is a vast range of this plant that are native to Chile. The genus is named after Empress Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie, who was the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.
